- Heat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Mix the peanut butter, sugar, egg, and baking soda until the dough is smooth and evenly combined.
- Scoop the dough into roughly 1-inch balls and place them about 2 inches apart on the prepared baking sheet.
- Flatten each dough ball with the tines of a fork, making the familiar crisscross pattern.
- Bake for 8–10 minutes, until the edges are set while the centers still look slightly soft.
- Cool the cookies on the baking sheet for about 5 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack to finish cooling.
Notes
Do not overbake. Regular commercial peanut butter usually gives the most consistent texture. If using natural peanut butter, stir it thoroughly first; if the dough is unusually sticky, chill it for 15–30 minutes before shaping.
