Step-by-Step
- Heat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease an 8- or 9-inch square baking dish.
- Combine the blueberries, granulated sugar, 2 tablespoons flour, lemon juice, and optional lemon zest. Transfer the filling to the prepared baking dish and spread it evenly.
- In a separate bowl, stir together the rolled oats, 3/4 cup flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Work in the butter until moist, coarse crumbs form.
- Sprinkle the topping evenly over the blueberry mixture, making sure the fruit is covered from edge to edge.
- Bake for 35–40 minutes, until the topping is golden brown and the blueberry filling is actively bubbling around the edges.
- Cool for at least 10–15 minutes before serving so the blueberry juices can thicken. Spoon into bowls and serve warm with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, or plain yogurt.
Notes
Old-fashioned rolled oats give the topping its best texture. Frozen blueberries may be used without thawing; add approximately 5–10 minutes to the baking time. For a filling thickener variation, substitute 1 tablespoon cornstarch for the 2 tablespoons of flour.
