Ingredients

Cupcakes
  • 1 box (15.25 oz/432 g) Devil's food or chocolate cake mix
  • As specified on cake-mix package Water
  • As specified on cake-mix package Vegetable oil
  • As specified on cake-mix package Eggs
Frosting and Decorations
  • 1 container (16 oz/454 g) Vanilla frosting
  • As needed Red gel or liquid food coloring
  • 12 Miniature chocolate sandwich cookies
  • 24 Small red candies
  • 48 Miniature chocolate chips or small black candy pieces
  • 12 pieces, about 2 inches each Black shoestring licorice
  • 12 optional Small black gumdrops or chocolate candies

Method

Step-by-Step
  1. Heat the oven to the temperature stated on the cake-mix package, usually 350°F (175°C), and line a 12-cup muffin pan with paper liners. Prepare the devil's food or chocolate cake mix with the water, vegetable oil, and eggs listed on the package directions.
  2. Divide the batter evenly among the 12 liners, filling each about two-thirds full. Bake for 18–23 minutes, until the cupcakes spring back when lightly touched and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  3. Cool the cupcakes in the pan for about 5 minutes, then transfer them to a wire rack. Let them cool completely, which usually takes about 30 minutes, before adding frosting or candy decorations.
  4. Tint the vanilla frosting bright red with red gel or liquid food coloring, adding a little at a time until the color is vivid and even. Frost each completely cooled cupcake generously, creating a smooth, rounded surface for the ladybug design.
  5. Place one miniature chocolate sandwich cookie near the back or edge of each cupcake to form the ladybug's head. If using optional black gumdrops or chocolate candies, position one beside or in front of the cookie as an additional head detail.
  6. Arrange two red candies on the frosting in front of the cookie head to suggest the ladybug's two wings. Leave a narrow red-frosting line between them if you want the wings to look clearly separated.
  7. Add four miniature chocolate chips or small black candy pieces to each cupcake as spots, placing two on each red wing. Press them in gently so they stay secure without crushing the frosting.
  8. Cut the black shoestring licorice into twelve pieces about 2 inches long, using kitchen scissors for neat ends. Insert two pieces into the frosting immediately behind or beside each cookie head so they stand upright as antennae.
  9. If the frosting feels soft or the decorations begin to slide, chill the decorated cupcakes briefly until the frosting firms. Serve the ladybugs once set, arranging them on a picnic board or colorful dessert tray.

Notes

Cool cupcakes completely before frosting so the red frosting does not slide and the candies do not sink. Insert the licorice antennae immediately after frosting. Prepared chocolate cupcakes, red fruit leather, red candy melts, black decorating gel, or a split chocolate sandwich cookie can be used as variations.
