Step-by-Step
- Slice 2 pounds of fully cooked smoked sausage or kielbasa into evenly sized 1/2- to 3/4-inch pieces.
- Place the sausage in the slow cooker, then add the barbecue sauce and packed brown sugar. Add any optional Worcestershire sauce, smoked paprika or black pepper, and diced onion.
- Stir thoroughly until every sausage piece is coated with the sauce and sugar mixture.
- Cover and cook on Low for 4 to 6 hours or on High for 2 to 3 hours, stirring once or twice during cooking.
- When the sausage is hot and the sauce is thick and glossy, switch the slow cooker to Warm for serving. Serve with toothpicks.
Notes
Use fully cooked sausage and avoid cooking substantially longer than necessary, since the sauce may become too thick or scorch around the edges. If using a 14- to 16-ounce package instead of 2 pounds, reduce the barbecue sauce and brown sugar proportionally.
