Ingredients

Jalapeño Poppers
  • 6 medium Fresh jalapeño peppers
  • 8 oz (225 g) Cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup (about 4 oz/115 g) Finely shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup, optional Cooked, crumbled bacon
  • 1/2 teaspoon Garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon Onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon Fine salt
Breading
  • 1/2 cup All-purpose flour
  • 1 Large egg
  • 1 tablespoon Water
  • 1 cup Panko breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 teaspoon Paprika
For Air Frying
  • As needed Nonstick cooking spray or a small amount of oil

Method

Step-by-Step
  1. Wash and dry the jalapeños. Slice each one lengthwise, remove the seeds and membranes, and leave some membrane in place if you prefer more heat.
  2. Mix softened cream cheese, cheddar, bacon, garlic powder, onion powder, and salt in a bowl until evenly combined.
  3. Fill each jalapeño half with the cheese mixture, slightly mounding the filling without overstuffing.
  4. Place flour in one bowl, beat the egg with water in a second bowl, and combine panko with paprika in a third bowl.
  5. Dip each filled jalapeño half in flour, then egg, then panko. Press the crumbs gently onto the filling so they adhere.
  6. Lightly spray the air fryer basket and the popper tops with oil. Arrange the poppers in one layer, filling side up, without crowding.
  7. Air-fry at 375°F (190°C) for 8 to 12 minutes, checking early, until the coating is golden and crisp and the cheese is hot.
  8. Let the poppers rest for 2 to 3 minutes before serving. The short rest allows the filling to settle slightly and helps prevent an especially hot cheese center from spilling immediately.

Notes

Dry the peppers thoroughly, avoid overfilling, and refrigerate or freeze the breaded poppers for 10 to 15 minutes before cooking to help the coating stay attached. Air fryer models vary, so check the panko early. Store leftovers in the refrigerator and reheat in the air fryer until hot and crisp.
