Crispy Air Fryer Grilled Cheese Sandwich Recipe

Crispy Air Fryer Grilled Cheese Sandwich

Make one golden, crisp grilled cheese sandwich in the air fryer with only three basic ingredients. The bread browns beautifully while the cheese melts in the center in about 6–8 minutes.

Total Time 11 minutes
Servings: 1 servings

Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 2 slices Sandwich bread
  • 2 slices, about 1½–2 ounces total American cheese, cheddar, or a combination
  • 1 tablespoon, divided Softened butter

Method

Step-by-Step
  1. Preheat the air fryer to 370°F for about 3 minutes if your model recommends preheating.
  2. Spread the softened butter evenly over one side of each bread slice, covering the surface all the way to the edges.
  3. Place the cheese between the bread slices with the buttered sides facing outward.
  4. Place the sandwich in the air-fryer basket in a single layer. If the fan lifts the top slice, secure it with a toothpick during the first few minutes.
  5. Air-fry for 3–4 minutes, then carefully flip the sandwich.
  6. Cook for another 3–4 minutes, until both sides are golden and crisp and the cheese is melted.
  7. Rest the sandwich for 1 minute before slicing and serving. Remove any toothpick before eating.

Notes

Use softened butter for an even coating and check early because thin bread or a small air fryer may brown in 2–3 minutes per side. Dense bread or thick cheese may need about 1 additional minute.
