Step-by-Step
- Pour the milk into a small saucepan while it is still cool. Whisk in the cocoa powder, granulated sugar, and pinch of salt until the mixture is evenly combined.
- Place the saucepan over medium-low heat and whisk frequently until the milk is hot and steaming. Do not let it boil.
- Add the creamy peanut butter and whisk continuously until it has completely melted into the cocoa mixture and the drink looks smooth, about 1–2 minutes.
- Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract. Taste carefully and make sure the peanut butter and chocolate flavors are evenly blended.
- Divide the hot chocolate between two mugs. Add whipped cream, mini marshmallows, chocolate shavings or mini chocolate chips, and peanut butter drizzle as desired, then serve immediately.
Notes
Whole milk gives the creamiest texture, while 2% milk also works. A splash of heavy cream can be added for a richer drink. Stir natural peanut butter thoroughly before measuring so the oils and solids are combined. Keep the milk below a simmer because boiling can scorch it and make the drink less smooth.
