Step-by-Step
- Heat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease an 8-by-8-inch or similar baking dish.
- Toss the sliced apples with lemon juice, granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, and nutmeg until evenly coated.
- Spread the seasoned apples in the prepared baking dish, arranging them in an even layer.
- Combine the oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt in a bowl. Stir in the melted butter until coarse crumbs form.
- Scatter the crumble topping evenly over the apples, covering the fruit from edge to edge.
- Bake for 40–50 minutes, until the topping is browned and the apple juices bubble around the edges.
- Cool the crisp for 10–15 minutes before serving so the juices thicken and the topping becomes more cohesive.
Notes
Choose firm apples such as Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, Braeburn, or a combination. Very soft apples may release too much water. Let the crisp rest before serving, and refrigerate leftovers in a covered container.
