Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 2 14.5-ounce cans Cut green beans, drained well
  • 1 10.5-ounce can Condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 3/4 cup Milk
  • 1/8 teaspoon Ground black pepper
  • 1 cup Shredded sharp cheddar cheese, divided
  • 1 1/3 cups French-fried onions, divided

Method

Step-by-Step
  1. Heat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 1 1/2- to 2-quart baking dish.
  2. In a mixing bowl, stir together the condensed cream of mushroom soup, milk, and ground black pepper until the sauce is smooth and evenly combined.
  3. Add the well-drained green beans, 3/4 cup of the shredded cheddar, and about 2/3 cup of the French-fried onions. Stir gently so the beans remain intact while the cheese and onions are distributed.
  4. Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish and spread it into an even layer. Bake uncovered for about 25 minutes, or until the casserole is hot and bubbling around the edges.
  5. Stir the hot casserole gently, then sprinkle the remaining 1/4 cup cheddar and the remaining French-fried onions over the top. Return the dish to the oven for another 5 minutes, until the cheese melts and the onions are crisp.

Notes

Drain canned green beans very well to prevent a thin sauce. Add the fried onions in two stages for flavor inside the casserole and a crisp topping. Fresh green beans may be used in place of canned; use about 1 1/2 pounds, trim them, blanch for 4-5 minutes, and drain thoroughly before assembling.
