Ingredients

Meat and Aromatics
  • 1 pound Lean ground beef or Italian sausage
  • 1 small Small yellow onion, diced
  • 2 cloves Garlic, minced
Creamy Filling
  • 1 jar, about 15 ounces Alfredo sauce
  • 1 cup Sour cream
  • 1 cup Shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup Shredded cheddar cheese, divided
Seasonings and Topping
  • 1 bag, about 32 ounces Frozen tater tots
  • 1/2 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • 1/2 teaspoon Kosher salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon Black pepper
Optional Add-Ins
  • 1 cup Frozen peas, broccoli, or sliced mushrooms

Method

Step-by-Step
  1. Heat the oven to 375°F and lightly grease a 9-by-13-inch baking dish.
  2. Brown the ground beef or Italian sausage with the diced onion in a large skillet. Drain any excess fat.
  3. Add the minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds, just until fragrant.
  4. Stir in the Alfredo sauce, sour cream, Italian seasoning, kosher salt, black pepper, and optional vegetables. Heat until the mixture is thoroughly combined.
  5. Stir in the mozzarella and 1/2 cup of the cheddar until the cheese is distributed through the filling.
  6. Spread the creamy meat mixture evenly in the prepared baking dish.
  7. Arrange the frozen tater tots in a single layer over the filling, then sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup cheddar on top.
  8. Bake uncovered for 40–50 minutes, until the tater tots are crisp and golden and the casserole bubbles around the edges.
  9. Rest the casserole for 5–10 minutes before serving so the creamy filling can settle slightly.

Notes

Keep the tater tots frozen until assembly for the best crisp texture. For a browner topping, broil for the final 2–3 minutes while watching closely so the cheese does not burn.
