Step-by-Step
- Heat the oven to 375°F and lightly grease a 9-by-13-inch baking dish.
- Brown the ground beef or Italian sausage with the diced onion in a large skillet. Drain any excess fat.
- Add the minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds, just until fragrant.
- Stir in the Alfredo sauce, sour cream, Italian seasoning, kosher salt, black pepper, and optional vegetables. Heat until the mixture is thoroughly combined.
- Stir in the mozzarella and 1/2 cup of the cheddar until the cheese is distributed through the filling.
- Spread the creamy meat mixture evenly in the prepared baking dish.
- Arrange the frozen tater tots in a single layer over the filling, then sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup cheddar on top.
- Bake uncovered for 40–50 minutes, until the tater tots are crisp and golden and the casserole bubbles around the edges.
- Rest the casserole for 5–10 minutes before serving so the creamy filling can settle slightly.
Notes
Keep the tater tots frozen until assembly for the best crisp texture. For a browner topping, broil for the final 2–3 minutes while watching closely so the cheese does not burn.
