Step-by-Step
- Heat the oven according to the brownie mix instructions, usually 350°F (175°C). Grease an 8- or 9-inch square baking pan.
- Prepare the brownie batter with the package directions, commonly using 2 large eggs, 1/2 cup vegetable oil, and 2 tablespoons water. Spread the batter into the prepared pan.
- Bake for approximately 20-25 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out with a few moist crumbs. Cool the brownies completely before cutting them into 6-8 squares or bite-size pieces.
- Place one brownie in each tall serving glass or dessert bowl. Add one or two scoops of vanilla ice cream to every serving.
- Pour chilled root beer slowly over the ice cream and brownie in stages because the float will foam substantially. Add more root beer as the foam settles until each glass reaches the desired level.
- Top with whipped cream, chocolate syrup, chopped walnuts or pecans, and a maraschino cherry if desired. Serve immediately.
Notes
Chill the glasses and root beer beforehand, and pour the root beer gradually to control foaming. Let brownies cool completely before assembly; if a warmer dessert is preferred, briefly reheat only the brownie portion just before adding the ice cream.
