Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 4 steaks, about 1½-2 lb total Beef cube steaks
  • 1 medium Medium onion, thinly sliced
Gravy
  • 1 10.5 oz can Condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 10.5 oz can Condensed cream of chicken soup
  • 1 packet, about 1 oz Dry onion soup mix
  • 1 cup Beef broth
Seasoning
  • to taste Black pepper

Method

Step-by-Step
  1. Slice the onion thinly and scatter it across the bottom of the slow cooker. If desired, quickly brown the cube steaks in a hot skillet for 1-2 minutes per side before adding them to the Crock Pot.
  2. Arrange the cube steaks over the sliced onions and season lightly with black pepper. Do not add much salt because the condensed soups and dry onion soup mix already provide substantial seasoning.
  3. Whisk together the cream of mushroom soup, cream of chicken soup, beef broth, and dry onion soup mix in a bowl until the mixture is smooth and evenly combined.
  4. Pour the gravy mixture over the steaks, making sure the meat is well covered. Cover the slow cooker with its lid.
  5. Cook on low for 6-8 hours or on high for 3-4 hours, until the cube steaks are tender and easily cut with a fork. Avoid repeatedly lifting the lid during cooking.
  6. Stir the gravy before serving. If it is thicker than you prefer, stir in a small amount of beef broth, then serve the steaks and gravy over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles.

Notes

Browning is optional but adds better color and flavor. Keep the extra salt to a minimum, and use the low setting for the most tender result. Refrigerate leftovers promptly and reheat gently with a splash of beef broth if the gravy thickens.
