Step-by-Step
- Heat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and butter an 8-by-8-inch or similarly sized 2-quart baking dish.
- Toss the sliced apples with granulated sugar, flour, lemon juice, cinnamon, and optional nutmeg. Spread the seasoned apples evenly in the prepared dish.
- Combine the topping flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt in a bowl. Rub or cut in the cold cubed butter until coarse, irregular crumbs form, leaving some larger pieces.
- Scatter the crumble topping evenly over the apples, covering the surface without pressing it down firmly.
- Bake for 40–45 minutes, until the apples are tender, the juices bubble around the edges, and the topping is golden brown.
- Rest the crumble for 10–15 minutes before serving so the fruit juices thicken slightly. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream, custard, or whipped cream.
Notes
Use a mixture of tart and firm apples for the best flavor and texture. Keep the butter cold, slice apples about ¼ inch thick, and avoid very soft apples, which may become mushy. For a traditional British crumble, omit the oats and use the flour, butter, and sugar topping.
