- Trim the asparagus by snapping or cutting off the tough lower ends.
- Cook the asparagus in lightly salted boiling water for about 2–3 minutes, until bright green and just tender. Drain well.
- Melt the butter in a small skillet over medium heat. Cook for about 2–3 minutes, swirling occasionally, until the milk solids are golden brown and the butter smells nutty.
- Remove the skillet from the heat and carefully stir in the balsamic vinegar. The butter may sputter briefly.
- Arrange the asparagus on a serving dish. Spoon or drizzle the balsamic brown butter over the spears, season with salt and pepper, and serve immediately.
Notes
Watch the butter closely because it can change from golden brown to burnt within seconds. Remove it from the heat as soon as the milk solids are amber-colored and the butter smells nutty. Drain the asparagus promptly to prevent residual heat from making it limp.
