Step-by-Step
- Preheat the air fryer to 375–400°F. Preheating is optional for some models, but it helps the hot dogs brown more evenly from the start.
- Make 2–3 shallow diagonal cuts in each hot dog, or make one lengthwise slit without cutting all the way through. These cuts allow the casing to open slightly and help the outside become crisp.
- Arrange the hot dogs in a single layer in the air-fryer basket. Leave room around them so hot air can circulate properly; no added oil is needed.
- Air-fry at 375–400°F for 5–7 minutes, turning once if needed. Use the shorter time for thinner hot dogs and the longer time for larger hot dogs or a more browned exterior.
- For toasted buns, place them in the air fryer during the final 1–2 minutes of cooking. Watch closely because buns brown quickly.
- Place each hot dog in a bun and add mustard, ketchup, relish, chopped onions, sauerkraut, shredded cheese, or any combination you enjoy. Serve immediately while the hot dogs and buns are warm.
Notes
Do not overcrowd the basket, since air circulation creates the crisp exterior. No oil is generally required because hot dogs release their own fat during cooking. Toast buns only briefly at the end so they do not become dry or hard.
