Step-by-Step
- Use a microwave-safe mug with at least 12-ounce capacity. Add the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt, then stir thoroughly to break up any lumps.
- Add the milk, neutral-flavored vegetable oil, and vanilla extract. Mix until a smooth batter forms, scraping the bottom and sides of the mug so no dry flour or cocoa remains.
- Stir in the chocolate chips if using. Microwave on HIGH for 60–90 seconds, beginning with 60 seconds and adding 10–15-second intervals only if needed.
- Remove the mug carefully and let the cake stand for 1 minute before eating. The cake should be risen and mostly set, with a center that may still look slightly moist.
Notes
Microwave power varies, so avoid overcooking. A wide mug promotes more even cooking than a narrow cup. Serve immediately with whipped cream, vanilla ice cream, chocolate syrup, powdered sugar, or extra chocolate chips.
