Step-by-Step
- Prepare a campfire with a bed of hot, glowing coals, or preheat a grill or oven to about 350°F. Line a cast-iron Dutch oven with heavy-duty foil or grease it thoroughly.
- Spread both cans of blackberry pie filling evenly across the bottom of the prepared Dutch oven.
- Sprinkle the dry yellow cake mix evenly over the blackberry filling. Do not stir or mix the cake mix into the fruit.
- Pour the lemon-lime soda slowly and evenly over the entire surface of the cake mix. Do not stir, because the soda helps create the cobbler topping.
- Cover the Dutch oven and cook over hot coals for 30 to 40 minutes, rotating the Dutch oven and lid about a quarter turn every 10 to 15 minutes. Continue cooking until the blackberry filling bubbles and the top is golden and set.
- Rest the cobbler for 5 to 10 minutes before serving. Spoon it into bowls while warm and serve with ice cream if desired.
Notes
Use glowing coals rather than direct flames to prevent scorching. Pour the soda over the cake mix without stirring, and rotate the Dutch oven regularly for more even cooking. Refrigerate leftovers and reheat gently before serving.
